Prostitution, hate it or love it is a profession as old as man, maybe that is why it seems to always stand the test of time. From times when prostitutes where stoned, to times of proper legal actions, religiously and politically they have been fought from all angles, so why do they thrive? Because we let them! An American artiste, “Scratch” had the above in one of his songs and it made sense, i must have been thirteen or something when he sang that song, but truth be told they won’t sell if we won’t buy! Prostitution can only thrive if they have clientele, be it the street hawkers, the school girl hooking up with Aristos, or the high class call girls in fancy places like the Moulin rouge in Paris, it all boils down to one thing sex in exchange for money. A bid to satisfy that age long craving for sexual satisfaction, the desire to fulfil some crazy and outrageous fantasy, the quest for an adventure, for various reasons which i would never fully understand, they are patronised.
Many have had their reputations torn apart by it, their homes wrecked and many more will, but that does not stop the trend, the danger seem to make it a lot more fascinating for some.
This has always been a fascinating topic, so much so that I wrote my under grad project on PROSTITUTION AS A SOCIAL VICE (it was written in French), it was one research that did not feel like an academic work, because I found it quite intriguing as a topic, that i had fun doing the write up. But I have never been able to get over the one tracked punishment meted out to just the prostitutes, while their clients face next to nothing! Not good enough for me, because i think both parties are just as guilty and should be punished as such, because without the clients we would not have prostitutes, or to put it in a more appealing tone for the poet in me THEY WON’T SELL IF WE WON’T BUY!
You don’t think those pot bellied old men, sugar mummies and suave looking guys fell from outer space did you? Well, hold the thought.
