Mursi, Egypt's First Elected President Sworn In

Islamist Mohamed Mursi was sworn in as Egypt’s first democratically elected president, praising the ruling military even as he assumed an office whose powers were diluted by the generals who took over after Hosni Mubarak’s ouster last year.
The ceremony, held today in the Supreme Constitutional Court across the street from the military hospital where Mubarak is being treated, came a day after Mursi took a symbolic oath in Cairo’s Tahrir Square before tens of thousands of supporters.
“Today, Egypt is a civil, national, constitutional and modern state,” Mursi said in comments broadcast live from the court on state television after the oath. “And thus, this state is born today as a strong state, thanks to its people, its history, the beliefs of its people and its institutions.”
